When writing, make a plan…and “Own the Journey”

Learn more about TimHere’s one I hear a lot: “Tim, how do I get on a regular writing schedule?”

Since I work with novelists, I know exactly what this means—and it’s a little bit of a trick question.

The obvious response would be, “Just set an alarm clock for the same time every morning, and force yourself to open up your laptop and write. Problem solved!”

Not so fast.

The thing is, they’re not literally asking me how to wake up in the morning, dress themselves, and sit down at their desk.

What they’re really asking is this:

“How do I get this novel done without losing focus, getting stuck, or losing motivation halfway through and giving up?”

The trick, I tell them, is to have the entire process mapped out—starting today, of course, and ending on the day you’d like to throw your book launch party.

I call this Owning the Journey.

You probably wouldn’t advise a friend who’s going on a cross-country road trip to “just start driving” without even looking at a map. How would they know which roads to take? Or when they could expect to arrive?

That’s pretty important information, and it makes the trip easier and less stressful.

So why should writing a book be any different?

When you Own the Journey, you know what to expect and the pieces just fall into place. You can ease up a little if you’re ahead of schedule, or put the pedal to the metal if you’re falling behind. Best of all, you have the peace of mind of knowing that you’re doing everything right. It’s like a weight off your shoulders.

Believe it or not, it only takes a few seconds to plan out the next year or so of your life. It’s why I created the personalized Daily Action Calendar as an exclusive benefit of the Better Writers Club. We’re a welcoming group of writers who are serious about publishing our books.

If you’ve been flailing about, wondering if and when your novel will ever be done, set up your Daily Action Calendar today. In seconds, you can experience what it feels like to Own the Journey.

But hurry—registration closes July 15!

I’m Timothy Pike, self-publishing and productivity coach specializing in helping you publish a beautiful book to the virtual shelves of Amazon—and the real shelves of your local bookstore. It’s all part of the Better Writers Club!

  1. I have heard this from many writers and the process takes a huge variety of form from 3X5 cards, to outlines, notes, whatever. But for me, the problem was that except once, I didn’t really WANT to write a book. I’ve always like short, pointed texts and blogging is my born-again platform. I applaud all you driven people who get entire books written and edited and published.
