Welcome to the 2020 edition of the Official Writer’s Goal List of 2020, where novelists from all over the world are declaring their writing goals for 2020!
Whether you’re a writer or not, you can help us make this list longer and stronger.
Here’s how:
If you’re a writer, comment below with your writing goals for 2020.
If you’re not a writer, reply to any comment below with “I’m holding you to it!”
This is an easy (but powerful) way to motivate…and get motivated!
Why? Because all of the 2020 goals on this list will remain etched onto this page for all of time—and for all to see.
And by letting the world know what you hope to achieve in the coming year, you’ll be much more likely to hold yourself to account.
(By the way, is your goal to write a novel in 2020? The Novel Writer Boot Camp can help you write a fantastic novel—and set a deadline for finishing it! Check it out)
The New Year is all about starting fresh. It’s about making writing your #1 priority, and taking all those things you said you’d do “someday” and putting them front and center.
It’s about letting life know that you are the one in charge here, and that no matter what you’ve tried in the past—and no matter how many times you’ve stumbled or faltered—this time it’s for real.
2020 is your year!
So again…
If you’re a writer, comment below with your writing goals for 2020.
If you’re not a writer, reply to any comment below with “I’m holding you to it!”
After you do that, be sure to share this blog post on your favorite social media site (using the “Share this” buttons below)…the more people we can involve, the more powerful this list will be!
I’m writing memoir, not a novel. I have eight chapters done and hope to finish a first draft in 2020, not sure how many chapters that will be but I’m guessing six to eight more.

With my plan to re-organize my time management and who I spend my time with when I’m not at the writing desk, I have a good feeling about this.

I plan to write more short stories and complete the ones I have started. I write about friends and family I have known over the years, so there is some research done before I write, and that takes time. I additionally plan to complete a children’s book I have been working on for a few years, illustrations included. Writing is something that takes effort and diligence. Best of luck in your endeavors this year.

This year, my goal is to keep working on my book as much as possible, and to stay focused! This will be the first book I have ever written, but I’ve had ideas for it for a few years now. I’m ready to put these ideas together and create this book that I’ve been dying to write!

I’m writing my first children’s picture book – which is my first book ever. Not sure if picture books apply here, but I’m putting my name here in (digital) ink anyway!
Tim, I think you and I actually worked on this together long ago. You were an excellent coach and I am still immensely grateful; I just struggled to find an illustrator. And then, a year later, I stumbled on the realization that I could in fact draw!! I am therefore illustrating my work as well. So, my goal for 2020 is to complete more than 1/4 of my book’s illustrations. Alongside this, I’m setting a goal to solidify my manuscript in preparation for publishing next year, and be more involved in my writing communities again while accomplishing these!

Fantastic! Aw shucks, thank you. I do remember that, and since then I’ve even helped publish a children’s illustrated book, so I know how much is involved. That is great news, I hope we will be seeing more of you in the coming year!

I agree with better late than never, and I’ll probably be asking this very same question again next month 😮
